What is Sport Climbing?
Sport climbing involves high-intensity climbing on relatively short routes. Its distinguishing characteristics include pre placed bolts and an emphasis on the physical aspect of the climb rather than the destination or summit.
Sport Climbing is a full body workout and can improve your strength, endurance and speed in most muscle groups on your body. The nature of the exercise forces you to use your entire body to climb the wall, not just your upper body. Many people think it’s just about having strength in your arms, but it’s not. The motion of climbing works every part of you. From your fingers and forearms as you grip the rock or climbing hold, your abs and core as you lift your legs into position then your whole body as you propel yourself up with your legs and pull up with on your arms. Climbing strengthens your hands and forearms, biceps, shoulders, neck, traps, upper back, lats, lower back, abs, glutes, thighs and calves.
Sport Climbing doesn’t only keep your muscles fit. It’s a sport that not only stimulates but also improves dramatically your problem solving skills, cognitive ability and confidence. Goal setting is a natural development of sport climbing as to climb rocks you need to set goals and move towards them. Stress relief is for many one of the most beneficial aspect of sport climbing, as when you are climbing you cannot think of anything else other than your next move. If you can climb a wall, you can do anything, you confidence is boosted as you constantly achieve something which once seemed impossible. Other mental sport climbing benefits are: decision making, planning, concentration, determination, spatial awareness and motor skills.
